Emma’s heels click-clicked on the slick linoleum floor that carried her to the room at the far end of the Helix building, at least that’s where the guy at the help desk directed. He’d been more interested in her chest, even though she wore a coat, than her destination. Fifteen minutes to game time. Cutting this close.

Her heart hammered, but not because she was moving fast. This wasn’t her scene. Standing in the spectator section, sure. Behind a computer? Nope.

She had a burner cell phone in her briefcase because she’d been warned there could be hackers in the room. Quick peek inside and… Check.

Designer fitted dress? Check.

Hair and makeup professionally perfect? Check.

Bitch armor in place? Not yet, but it would be by the time she made it to the end of the hallway. She shifted the shoulder of her briefcase, which served as a work purse and marched faster.

Inside the room, the hum of voices from far more than thirty or so guys, most wearing ball caps or toboggans with little gaming logos hovered behind players who’d already claimed gaming stations. Half the guys looked under eighteen and were jittery as if hopped up on energy drinks. Each of the five gaming stations featured a moderately high-end computer, mouse pad, mouse, keyboard, and handheld controllers. A gigantic jumbo flat-screen TV on one side of the room must be where they’d project each game for the audience.

“Emma,” she heard from somewhere behind her.

Quan appeared next to her, dressed casual in jeans and a T-shirt. “So glad you showed. I wasn’t sure.”

She glanced around and took off her outer coat. Looks like I’m your token estrogen. “Happy I can bring the average age of competitors up a few years.”

Quan’s gaze darted down her dark red dress, which she knew looked hot. It showed off her breasts and butt. She used it when she needed others in a meeting distracted while she got what she needed.

“Got a date afterward?” Quan asked.

“Coming off work.” She lowered her voice conspiratorially, “I’m only doing this, you know, as a favor to the boss man because he wants info on how women fare in the competition setting.” She sighed dramatically. “I know I’ve got wicked gaming skills, like Tori, and might be happy to take you boys to Worlds, but I’m not convinced this is the best use of my time. Tell me there’s going to be some decent competition.”

Quan smiled. “Should be something.” He chinned over to Mateo, who was shooting daggers her way. “Looks like he thinks you’re hot.”

She chuckled. “That’s one way to interpret his look. I’m hoping he’s feeling intimidation. Where should I sit?”

“Anywhere you want.”

Anywhere turned out to be the only available computer station. Sucked that it was right next to Mateo. Without acknowledging his presence, she sat, although she felt his eyes on her outfit.

“No one cares what you look in reality once the game starts,” Mateo said.

She glanced his way as she picked up her headphones. “You do.”

A mouse jiggle and her heart jumped against her ribs when the home screen for Legion Wars lit up.
